There’s a lot of talk about creativity these days. (YAY!) We are creative entrepreneurs, we live creatively, we run creative businesses.
Creativity is even the theme for the year in all the children’s nurseries in my area, also in the one I work in. I’ve been asked to do a talk about creativity at our next staff meeting. Yes, please 🙂
And it’s a funny thing. With all this talk of creativity, from highly respected professors and business people, to people like you and me, there’s a chance it becomes a trend. Something we all have to wear for a while, like a new color for the season.
Or worse, creativity could be something we compare. If you don’t “do” creativity this way, you’re not doing it right.
Let’s not go there. because that is missing the point about what creativity is and why it’s important.
Creativity is important because…
Mihaly Csikzentmihaly writes:
“Creativity is a central source of meaning in our lives.”
Creativity is important, because using our creativity is the path to meaning, joy, play, new knowledge and skills, new discoveries and connections. It’s connections in our brain, connections with other people as well as ourselves.
Mihaly says too:
“The process of discovery involved in creating something new appears to be one of the most enjoyable activities any human can be involved in.”
As I wrote earlier, many people study and talk about creativity, and I often quote these people here, but why do I feel I need to get an experts opinion to prove what I know is true?
I’m a bit of a creativity nerd and I love learning about creativity from different people, and get their 2 cents. I’m also a creativity coach for that same reason.
As someone who has always lived a creative life, a life so different from pretty much everyone I know, I find it interesting that there are now studies that show, that the choices and decisions I’ve made in my life, are now recommended living.
It kinda makes me want to say “I told you so” to all the patronizing people I’ve met along my path. But I’m a nice person, so I’ll just think it out loud 😀 😀
But it does make me want to shout from the rooftops that paying attention to your creativity – in other words, what makes you you – is a way to live that will get you in touch with your emotions, your curiosity, your depth, your skills, as well as wonderful joy, flow and many, many happy moments.
Your creativity is important because it’s yours.
If you feel dissatisfaction in your life, like you feel there something missing in your life, some meaning, some joy, some higher purpose, chances are you’re not using your creativity.
If creativity is important, why aren’t we all living creatively?
To say we all should be living a creative life sounds great. It reads wonderfully.
It sounds fluffy and easy: just be creative and your life will be wonderful.
And if it was easy, more people would live creatively. For sure.
But it’s not easy.
It’s difficult and it’s the brave choice.
You might have to not live up to other people’s expectations. And adjust your own.
Living a creative life sometimes means standing alone for a while, away from a social group. And because we are social animals by DNA, that is really hard. But it’s only until you find a new social group.
Are you willing to do that?
In my opinion, that is what a meaningful life is. Insisting on expressing yourself through creativity, in small ways, or bigger ways, whenever you can. Especially when it’s difficult.
You can get creative right now, with these 2 writing prompts
If you up for getting a little creative, here’s a couple of sentences you can finish:
I opened the door, and there stood…………..
I opened the letter and it was from a long-lost Auntie who lived in Italy, and in the letter she wrote……………
Just write for 1 minute, it’ll get your creative juices flowing.
I don’t believe in separating us into groups of creatives, extroverts, introverts, left-brainers etc. Because we don’t live in separated groups .
I do believe in understanding who we are and how we live best, and then learn how to live together. In all life’s relationships.
How you learn, how you express yourself, the dreams and passions you have, is more important to pay attention to than ever before. That’s your creativity. And that won’t go out of fashion.
