Why a growth mindset is crucial to achieving your goals

A growth mindset is crucial to achieving your goals, and as every January is the goal-setting season, doing a bit of winter cleaning of your mindsets, is a mighty fine idea.

I go deep into goal setting in my coaching program. You do yourself huge favour thinking about what direction you want to walk in. And what kind of person you’d like to be. Because if you don’t, you get swallowed by life. Getting a job, paying the bills, getting annoyed by unimportant things, yet these things are what you come home and talk about. One day takes another and suddenly 10 years have passed, and you have a feeling inside “there’s more to this”.

As you know, the success rate for achieving the goals made around the new year is not high.

And there is a reason for this.

What is a growth mindset?

A growth mindset is a belief that your basic qualities have the ability to change. That you have the belief and confidence to do and learn something, and to change things about you.

We talk about having a fixed mindset or a growth mindset.

A fixed mindset is your inner critic, inner hater, or inner doubter. This is the fixed mindset persona. This person says things like:

  • I’m not good enough

  • I can’t do this and I’m also too fat.

  • It’s not my fault

  • I’m naturally not good at this, or I’m no good with money because I’m a creative

  • You can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Etc.

A growth mindset is a persona of

  • I like work that makes me think

  • I like to learn even though it means I make a lot of mistakes

  • This I haven’t tried before so I’ll definitely be able to do it (Pipi Longstocking quote)

  • I can change my talents, abilities, and intelligence and so my potential is limitless.

  • There’s a solution to every problem.

Why a growth mindset is crucial to achieving your goals

A growth mindset is crucial if you are aiming for goals that will change your life in some way. Like a new job, starting a business, or creating a personal change. Because a big goal means you have to evolve as a person and for that to happen, you have to believe you can change.

You know this quote from Einstein:

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results
— Albert Einstein

You are controlled by your habits, and they are hard to change. But how are you going to do something that requires you to do something different, if you do the same thing you’ve always done, and thinks the same thoughts as you think every day?

You’re going to have to find a way to deal with the fixed mindset inner critic, and kick it to the curb, if you’re to become a person who _______________________(insert your big goal here).

How to develop a growth mindset?

You can’t control what goes on around you, but you always have a choice in how you react, act, respond and think.

How you develop a growth mindset, is catching your fixed mindset limiting thoughts and beliefs, and change them around.

So if you catch thoughts like “I can’t do this, I’m not good enough, I’m not really a _______, I don’t know anything about running a business, I’m not a writer, It’s too hard, I won’t ever be skinny like them etc. etc. etc” snap them, write them down and re-write a new version.

Like this:

“I am not good enough to start and run a business”

“Everyone has to start at the beginning, and every successful business is successful because they learned from many mistakes made over the years. And I’m a good learner”

“If I try, I’ll fail and be humiliated and people will write nasty things about me on social media.”

“If I don’t try I will have failed anyway. So when I try and I fail I will be kind to myself and get comfort and support from my best friend, so I will learn how to try again. I will figure this out.”

You can word the sentences so they make sense to you, but this is how you change the negative and limiting story in your head, to a story of possibility.

Next step, after you have written these new stories down, is to memorize them. So when your mind drifts and you catch yourself being all “I can’t, I won’t, no…” you can say to your fixed persona “yes I can"

Changing from a negative mindset to a mindset of confidence and possibility is no more difficult or complicated than this. But it will take a conscious and active effort.

You can totally do it. You can take control over your life with a growth mindset and that is a great feeling.

Now, it’s your turn.

Think of 2 fixed negative mindset thoughts you have, write them down and re-word them. Say them to yourself from now on and forever. It’ll lift you up and give you confidence.

P.S You can do this process with every negative, fixed thought you have. It’ll work just the same with thoughts about your boss, family members, losing weight and so on.
