How to balance being a mom with starting a creative business
This is the big one, isn't it?
How do you balance being a mom of young children, or young-ish children with starting a creative business? Or if not a business, then a creative passion? And having a job as well.
There just is not one answer to that question.
I can tell you from my life, that it's a daily practice.
I have 3 children, aged 10 (twins) and 13, I work 5 days a week, and then I have my passion, my creative playground, my future, my calling:
My creativity studies and helping women live life with joy and meaning by using their creativity.
I could honestly spend most of my waking hours on my computer, learning about Pinterest, looking for other great blogs, writing, connecting with amazing women, making images, working on my website, learning more about online business. And a whole lot more.
Time flies when I do these things. I'm in flow.
It's sooo much more fun to dive into my creative world than doing chores around the house and cooking dinner. My husband was being funny the other day and said he'll draw a map to the kitchen for me. Ha-blo..y-ha!
I'm ok with the practical stuff that needs doing. I do what I have to and leave the rest. Then once in a while, I do a good cleaning and tidying up. I actually feel best when my home is neat and tidy, and clean, so I do small bits here and there.
It's harder to balance my"computer work" with my kids.
We are all "screen people" in our house and we definitely spend too much time behind our screens. But we also have fun and silliness, and I talk a lot with my kids. Especially my 13-year-old and I have great talks about life, feelings, and school.
But it's heartbreaking to have my hubby tell me Casper and Morgan ask him why I never take them swimming.
"Does mom not want to see us swim, Dad?"
'Cor, talk about feeling guilty!
Of course, I'm going to take them swimming, and I do many other things with them. But the guilt is there if I am not available to them every minute of every day.
My sister once said to me, when our children were really young, Louis might have been 4 or 5, that "small children - small problems, big children - big problems".
And I remember thinking, "yeah well, you haven't had twins, so what do you know?"
But I have to admit, she was right.
It is totally different problems a 13-year-old has than a 5-year-old.
So how do you balance being a mom with work and starting a creative business?
I think the most important thing to do, is to make a decision about what you want to do and what is important for you, and then look into your expectations.
Notice what things in your life gives you energy, and what things drain you.
I hope you know perfectionism is a con. There are no perfect homes, bodies, children, businesses, relationships and so on.
Life is messy, kids are messy, and sometimes husbands are messy too (;-)) and I for one, am not going to spend my life tidying up and cleaning. So some expectations about how things are meant to look and be, have to go.
And realize that when you say YES to something, you say NO to something else. And many times, the one who gets the no, is you.
Being available all the time, being involved in your kids' school, taking them to sports, and looking after them, is just being a mom. I know. I have 3 kids.
But we share the responsibilities, my husband and I, and that frees me up some time.
And then it's about grabbing every bit of time you can in your day. An hour here and there of creating can make such a difference to your life.
There ain't no miracle way to create a life that fulfills you and feels meaningful to you, my friend, but I can tell you honestly, it's the daily journey that gets us there.
I hope you'll keep trying to some balance in your life, and not give up your creative life. We all need your goodness
